Musicians Without Borders is een internationale organisatie die muziek inzet als middel om mensen en gemeenschappen te ondersteunen die geraakt zijn door oorlog, conflict of gedwongen ontheemding. De kern is niet het geven van concerten, maar het opzetten van duurzame muziekprogramma’s die bijdragen aan herstel, verbinding en sociale samenhang.

Waar de organisatie voor staat

De organisatie vertrekt vanuit het idee dat samen muziek maken kan helpen om:

  • veilige plekken te creëren waar mensen elkaar ontmoeten;
  • onderlinge relaties te herstellen in verdeelde gemeenschappen;
  • vaardigheden en zelfvertrouwen op te bouwen, vooral bij jongeren;
  • psychosociaal welzijn te ondersteunen in contexten van stress, verlies en geweld.

Doelgroep

Musicians Without Borders richt zich met name op:

  • kinderen en jongeren die opgroeien in (post)conflictgebieden;
  • vluchtelingen en ontheemde gemeenschappen;
  • lokale begeleiders/educators en community leaders die muziekactiviteiten in hun eigen omgeving kunnen voortzetten.

Hoe het in de praktijk werkt

De aanpak is meestal community-based en trainingsgericht: de organisatie werkt samen met lokale partners en investeert in lokale capaciteit, zodat programma’s blijven bestaan als externe ondersteuning afneemt. Kenmerkend is het werken in groepen en het combineren van muziek met methoden uit community arts en (basis)psychosociale ondersteuning.

Typische onderdelen van het werk:

  • Muziekworkshops en groepssessies: samen zingen, ritme, instrumentale ensembles, songwriting en improvisatie, vaak met aandacht voor samenwerking en luisteren.
  • Train-the-trainer en methodiektrainingen: opleiding en coaching van lokale docenten, muzikanten of jeugdwerkers om zelf programma’s te draaien.
  • Vredes- en dialoogprojecten: muziek als gezamenlijke activiteit tussen groepen die door conflict tegenover elkaar zijn komen te staan.
  • Programmaontwikkeling met lokale partners: opbouw van curricula en lesmaterialen, begeleiding bij implementatie en kwaliteitsbewaking.
  • Monitoring en evaluatie: het volgen van effecten op deelname, welzijn, groepsdynamiek en continuïteit, passend bij de lokale context.
